Film Review: Miss Bala

Miss Bala is a mixture of drama, thriller and action. This movie provides and expresses the cultural experience behind the most badass story within Mexico. It surrounds around a woman that comes from America to visit her friend by crossing the Mexican border to help her enter in the most popular beauty pageant. Where she gets kidnapped by one of the most powerful drug cartels in Mexico and goes through hell to get her friend back after finding out that she has been kidnapped by the chief of police…. or so she thinks.

My overall review of watching this movie was that this storyline couldn’t be more spectacular. It provides excitement, drama and you can sense a tiny bit of romance between the drug cartel and the woman; as he’s trying to gain her trust. Even though, the whole movie from start to finish is just perfect; especially having one of my favourite actress ‘Gina Rodriguez’ playing the main role of the character Gloria. Gina fits and plays the character so well that you could feel every emotion that she was pulling off in every scene. Also, I found certain parts of the film to be funny cause of her.

Peter Sedgley: Perception of Colour?

Colour Cycle III, 1970

‘Acrylic paint on canvas, with 3 dichronic lamps and programmed control gear’

Description presented next to canvas:

“British artist Peter Sedgley has painted this canvas with a series of circles in different colours. It is viewed in a darkened space and lit by a programmed sequence of different coloured lights, producing a series of radical colour transformations. Sedgley is interested in the optical illusion of movement created by the colour and light combinations. Other artists in the 1960s and 70s explored these ideas as part of an art movement called op art, short for ‘optical’ art.”

My Opinion:

Overall, capturing this on camera really showed this piece in motion; as it caught my attention right away with its vibrant colours. This canvas reminds me off water ripples when the projection switches to the next colour sequence; by Peter Sedgley using circles that are different scales. I love the way that this piece uses soft rich colours that were done with acrylic paints. Even though, reading the description next to the piece, it made me surprised to find out that it was done using acrylics because I thought that the artist might have used watercolours to form such gentle and yet almost aluminous tones. However, I can say that this is very interesting.

Film Review: Nine Lives

Nine Lives is a mixture of comedy, drama and fantasy.  The movie starts off with a billionaire who is too focused on making his company the tallest building in the world. However, this guy has a family that he barely pays attention to until his fate changes and finds himself trapped in the body of the very same cat that was brought for his daughter’s birthday… Only he can turn himself back by spending time with his family.

Looking at both movies, I saw these links:

• Cats who are involved
• Both cat characters are surrounded by humans
• Cats who can talk and portray human characteristics
• Both characters dance

My overall opinion is that two movies can create the same impact, while connecting to their chosen audience; by using the most crazy, funny and yet unexpected things that sometimes get captured by cameras. However, by watching the movie ‘Nine lives’ you get to see that in one of the scenes a girl uses her camera to capture the cat ‘Mr Fuzzy pants’ who is flying across the room, while two adults try to catch him. In conclusion, I just found that scene to be hilarious as you wouldn’t imagine a cat doing something like that.
